OJALÁ and the Subjuctive

"OJALÁ" is one of the most common ways to express a desire in Spanish.

OJALÁ: hope, wish, hopefully, god willing.

Ojalá + presente de subjuntivo: it expresses our wish that something happens in the present or in the future when we think it's probable

Ojalá (que) mis estudiantes aprueben el examen de español.

I hope / I wish / Hopefully / God willing / my students pass the Spanish exam.

Ojalá + imperfecto de subjuntivo: it expresses our wish that something happens in the present or in the future when we think that it's actually pretty unlikely

Ojalá (que) mis estudiantes aprobaran/aprobasen el examen de español.

I hope / I wish / Hopefully / God willing my students passed the Spanish exam.

Ojalá + presente perfecto de subjuntivo: it expresses our wish that something happened in the past when we think it's probable that it actually happened

Ojalá (que) mis estudiantes hayan aprobado el examen de español.

I hope / I wish / Hopefully / God willing my students have passed the Spanish exam.

Ojalá + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo: it expresses our wish that something had happened in the past when we know it didn´t happen.

Ojalá (que) mis estudiantes hubieran/hubiesen aprobado el examen de español.

I hope / I wish / Hopefully / God willing my students had passed the Spanish exam.
