NOSOTROS COMMANDS: Let´s + verb

Affirmative commands:

Use the “nosotros” form of the present subjunctive, as follows:

¡Limpiemos la casa ahora mismo! Let´s go to clean the house right now!

Está lloviendo. ¡Cérremos las ventanas! It´s raining. Let´s close the windows!

  • Affirmative commands with direct and indirect pronouns and reflexive verbs: verb + pronoun

In affirmative commands, we add the pronouns to the end of the verb.

Paguemos la cuenta. Paguémosla. Let´s pay the bill. Let´s pay it.

Escribamos a María. Escribámosle. Let´s write Mary. Let´s write to her.

  • Watch out! When you use a reflexive verb you must drop the “s” of the conjugated verb before adding -nos.

Duchemos + nos : duchémonos (let´s have a shower)

Acostemos + nos: acostémonos (let´s go to bed)

This also happens with the indirect pronoun “se” (remember, if we have two pronouns together and both start with “l”, the indirect pronoun changes to “se”). In this case we drop the “s” of the conjugated verb and we add “se”, so we don´t use double “s”.

Escribamos una carta a María. Escribámosela. Let´s write a letter to Mary. Let´s write it to her.

Negative commands:

Use the “nosotros” form of the present subjunctive with “no” before the verb, as follows:

No escribamos la carta. Let´s not write the letter.

No paguemos en efectivo. Let´s not pay with cash.

  • Negative commands with direct and indirect pronouns and reflexive verbs: no + pronouns + verb

In negative commands we put the direct, indirect and reflexive pronouns between the negative word “no” and the verb as follows:

No paguemos la cuenta. No la paguemos. Let´s not pay the bill. Let´s not pay it.

No nos duchemos. Let´s not have a shower.

No escribamos la carta a María. No se la escribamos. Let´s not write a letter to Mary. Let´s not write it to her.

Notes:

. The verb “ir and irse” (to go, to leave, to go away) can also be used in indicative for the affirmative command, not for negative command.

Vamos a la playa = Vayamos a la playa. Let´s go to the beach.

Vámonos ahora mismo = Vayámonos ahora mismo. Let´s leave right now.

But:

No vayamos ahora mismo. Let´s not go right now.

No nos vayamos de aquí.

2. The construction “vamos a + infinitive” can also replace the nosotros command in everyday speech.

Cenemos aquí = Vamos a cenar aquí. Let´s have dinner here

Estudiemos español = Vamos a estudiar español. Let´s study Spanish.
