Irregular verbs in the future
There are twelve common verbs that are irregular in the future tense. Their endings are regular (-é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án), but their stems change.
There are patterns in how the infinitive stem changes so they can be grouped to make learning them a bit easier.
The twelve irregular verbs shown in three groups. The infinitive of each one appears with its first-person singular (yo) form in the future tense.
Group 1 (-ré, -rás, -rá, -remos, -réis, -rán)
caber to fit, have enough room: yo cabré.
No cabremos todos en el coche. We will not all fit in the car.
haber to have (auxiliary): yo habré.
Yo habré terminado el libro para el domingo. I will have finished the book by Sunday (Perfect Future).
poder to be able to: yo podré.
Antonio podrá comprar una casa nueva el mes que viene. Antonio will be able to buy a new house next month.
querer to want: yo querré.
Mañana ella querrá ir a la playa. Tomorrow she will want to go to the beach.
saber to know a fact, know how: yo sabré.
El domingo sabremos la verdad. On Sunday we will know the truth.
Group 2 (-dré, -drás, -drá, -dremos, -dréis, -drán)
poner to put, place: yo pondré.
María pondrá los zapatos en el baño. María will put the shoes in the bathroom.
salir to leave: yo saldré.
Saldrán a las ocho. They will leave at 8pm.
tener to have, hold: yo tendré.
Tendrás muchos amigos si eres agradable. You will have a lot of friends if you are nice.
valer to be worth: yo valdré.
¿Cuánto valdrá el coche el año que viene? How much will the car be worth next year?
venir to come: yo vendré.
¿Vendrás a nuestra fiesta? Will you come to our party?
Group 3
decir to say, tell: yo diré.
¿Qué dirán tus padres? What will your parents say?
hacer to do, make: yo haré.
Haremos el pastel mañana. We will make the cake tomorrow.
Compounds of irregular verbs
Some of the irregular verbs in the future have compounds that are irregular in the same way. For example, the first-person singular (yo) form of tener (“to have”) in the future tense is tendré, and for obtener (“to obtain, get”) it is obtendré.
Yo tendré un coche. I will have a car.
Yo obtendré empleo. I will get work.
Él hará la tarea. He will do the homework.
Él rehará la tarea. He will redo the homework.
Some common compounds irregular verbs in the future:
abstenerse de to abstain from (doing something): me abstendré de
atenerse a to depend on, rely on: me atendré a
componer to compose: compondré
contener to contain, hold: contendré
convenir en, to agree to (do something): convendré en
deshacer to undo, untie (a knot): desharé
detener to detain, stop, arrest: detendré
mantener to maintain: mantendré
obtener to obtain, get: obtendré
oponerse to oppose: me opondré
rehacer to redo, remake reharé
suponer to suppose, assume: supondré
*Exception:bendecir , to bless, is regular in the future tense.
El sacerdote te dirá la verdad. The priest will tell you the truth.
El sacerdote te bendecirá. The priest will bless you.
Habrá (there will be)
The third-person singular of haber in the future, habrá, is the future form of hay (there is, there are).When used alone, habrá translates as “there will be”.
Remember: “habrá” is used for both, singular and plural form.
Habrá un pastel de chocolate en tu fiesta. There will be a chocolate cake at your party.
Habrá veinte personas en la fiesta. There will be twenty people at the party.
