Verbs that take a preposition
VERBS THAT TAKE A PREPOSITION I
A:
Acostumbrarse a: to get used to, to become used to.
Ejemplo. Me he acostumbrado a ir al gimnasio todos los días y ahora lo necesito. I’ve got used to going to the gym and now I need it.
Asistir a: to attend.
Ejemplo. ¿Vas a asistir a la reunión mañana? Are you going to attend meeting tomorrow?
Atreverse a: to dare to do something.
Ejemplo. Mi hermano no se atreve a nadar con tiburones. My brother doesn’t dare to swim with sharks.
DE:
Enterarse de: to notice, to realize, to understand, to find out.
Ejemplos. ¿Te enteraste ayer de la lección? Did you understand the lesson yesterday?
Mi madre se ha enterado de que suspendí el examen. My mother found out I failed the test.
Arrepentirse de: to regret.
Ejemplo. No me arrepiento de nada. I regret nothing.
Darse cuenta de: to realize.
Ejemplo. Nos dimos cuenta de que estabas mintiendo. We realized that you were lying.
CON:
Soñar con: to dream about/of.
Ejemplo. Normalmente sueño con arañas. I usually dream about spiders.
Tropezarse con: to bump into (something).
Ejemplo. Ella se tropezó con el sofá. She bumped into the sofa.
Casarse con: to marry (someone).
Ejemplo. María se casó con Antonio el mes pasado. María married Antonio last month.
EN:
Pensar en: to think about.
Ejemplo. I think about you all day long. Pienso en tí todo el día.
Confiar en: to trust.
Ejemplo. Confía en mí, lo conseguiremos. Trust me, we’ll get it.
Insistir en: to insist on (something / doing something).
Ejemplo. Insistimos en que cenes con nosotros. We insist that you have dinner with us.
POR:
Preocuparse por: to worry about , to be concerned for / about.
Ejemplo. Me preocupo por tí. I worry about you.
Brindar por: to toast, to drink a toast.
Ejemplo. ¡Brindemos por todos nosotros! Let’s toast to all of us!
Optar por: to choose, to opt for.
Ejemplo. Yo opto por comprar en ese supermercado porque es mucho más barato que los otros. I choose to shop at that supermarket because it's a lot cheaper than all the others.
*Remember: if you use a verb after a preposition, you need to use the infinitive.
